Beyond intelligent tutoring systems: Using computers as METAcognitive tools to enhance learning?

چکیده

Framed by the existing theoretical and empirical research on cognitive and intelligent tutoring systems (ITSs), this commentary explores two areas not directly or extensively addressed by Akhras and Self (this issue). The first area focuses on the lack of conceptual clarity of the proposed constructivist stance and its related constructs (e.g., affordances, situations). Specifically, it is argued that a clear conceptualization of the novel constructivist stance needs to be delineated by the authors before an evaluation of their ambitious proposal to model situations computationally in intelligent learning environments (ILEs) can be achieved. The second area of exploration deals with the similarities between the proposed stance and existing approaches documented in the cognitive, educational computing, and AI in education literature. I believe that the authors are at a crossroads, and that their article presents an initial conceptualization of an important issue related to a constructivist-based approach to the computational modeling of situations in ILEs. However, conceptual clarity is definitively required in order for their approach to be adequately evaluated and used to inform the design of ILEs. As such, I invite the authors to re-conceptualize their framework by addressing how their constructivist stance can be used to address a particular research agenda on the use of computers as metacognitive tools to enhance learning.

Comparing Human-Human to Human-Computer Tutorial Dialogue

Intelligent Tutoring Systems are often modeled after human tutors; however, the effectiveness of this strategy is yet to be determined. Research on media interactions suggests that behaviors with humans are similar to those with computers. Intelligent Tutoring System studies have said the opposite. In this study we compared a human-human and a humancomputer tutoring system in terms of metacogni...

Metacognitive Practice Makes Perfect: Improving Students' Self-Assessment Skills with an Intelligent Tutoring System

Helping students’ improve their metacognitive and self-regulation skills holds the potential to improve students’ ability to learn independently. Yet, to date, there are relatively few success stories of helping students enhance their metacognitive skills using interactive learning environments. In this paper we describe the Self-Assessment Tutor, an intelligent tutoring system for improving th...

Designing for Metacognition - Applying Cognitive Tutor Principles to the Tutoring of Help Seeking

Intelligent Tutoring Systems have been shown to be very effective in supporting learning in domains such as mathematics, physics, computer programming, etc. However, they are yet to achieve similar success in tutoring metacognition. While an increasing number of educational technology systems support productive metacognitive behavior within the scope of the system, few attempt to teach skills s...

Cognitive Tutors as Research Platforms: Extending an Established Tutoring System for Collaborative and Metacognitive Experimentation

Cognitive tutors have been shown to increase student learning in long-term classroom studies but would become even more effective if they provided collaborative support and metacognitive tutoring. Reconceptualizing an established tutoring system as a research platform to test different collaborative and metacognitive interventions would lead to gains in learning research. In this paper, we defi...

Limitations of Student Control: Do Students Know When They Need Help?

Intelligent tutoring systems often emphasize learner control: They let the students decide when and how to use the system's intelligent and unintelligent help facilities. This means that students must judge when help is needed and which form of help is appropriate. Data about students’ use of the help facilities of the PACT Geometry Tutor, a cognitive tutor for high school geometry, suggest tha...
